Local Children’s Author Shan McFadden to Direct Next Fun Folk Production

Karen Graham

For this, the 8th anniversary of local children`s theatre group, Fun Folk Theatricals, the organization will operate under the leadership of local children`s author Shan McFadden who takes over from Pat Barr who has ably led the group for many years. They often perform original works, and this year McFadden`s short story, “The Princess and the Plumber” is being adapted as a children’s stage play and will be performed in March of 2016. It is a fairy tale for kids, but adults will appreciate the humour as well, with life lessons subtly delivered between the giggles.

Shan`s work traditionally takes the form of free audio books, which are available from his website, on Soundcloud or Youtube. He is looking forward to seeing his work take a different form, but it will still bear his signature fun and silliness. His stories often feature smart, sensitive children offering worldly-wise life lessons to frazzled and confused adults, which is encouraging for his audience. He seeks to encourage youngsters to build a better world, but his messages are not lectures but built on humour.

There will be five performances of the play over three days during next year`s March break, and is a very popular event in town, with sold out performances receiving standing ovations. Preparations will begin shortly, and the group is looking for children with acting aspirations aged four to seventeen to join the group. The two-hour rehearsals begin from mid-November on Monday evenings at the Millbrook Family Centre, but don`t think of these weekly practises as work- they provide the opportunity for children and adults to explore their creative side as imaginations are let loose in set and costume design, music is incorporated into the performance, and lines are rehearsed, adapted and relearned.
