Georgia Rose will perform at Christmas in the Village.
This year’s Christmas in the Village event has a new format and some new features. The most significant change is the timing: it is now an afternoon event.
There will also be live music for a portion of the afternoon, when Omemee’s singer-songwriter Georgia Rose will be serenading the crowds with some of her original tunes and Taylor Swift cover songs.
Music has become a more significant part of this young Trent university student’s life since she took first place in the Kawartha Lakes Alliance of Singer-Songwriters Youth Song contest earlier this year. She also placed third in Peterborough’s Got Talent show in April. These awards have opened the door to gigs at Jethro’s Bar + Stage and the Black Horse Pub in Peterborough, and in early December Georgia will be performing at the Women’s Business Network of Peterborough’s gala. She might be able to perform at a bar, but at 18 years of age she is barely old enough to consume the free drinks that are usually offered to performers at these venues.
While she received her first guitar at age ten, it languished in her room as she was uninspired by guitar lessons. She wanted to play the popular music that she enjoyed. In 2022 she picked up her guitar again and turned to YouTube instruction videos to fine tune her strumming skills and found her style.
Finding a melody is secondary in her song writing process. An English student, words are critical so she begins with lyrics, which can tell a story, help work through a problem or describe a feeling. Georgia is prolific writer and currently has 40 songs completed or in the works.
The prize for winning the Singer-Songwriter contest is a music video production for the song that earned the judge’s admiration: her prize-winning song, “Where did We Go?” Attending one of the Taylor Swift concerts last weekend could provide some inspiration for that performance. Welcome to Millbrook, Georgia! KG
