Letters to the Editor

We are writing in support of Leni Rautiainen’s “Open Letter” in the March edition of the Millbrook Times.

Ms. Rautiainen and fellow members of the Millbrook Farmers’ Market Management Committee have worked long and hard for several years to create a monthly market of which Millbrook can be proud. This market has only grown in strength, variety and number of vendors with every passing season.

The proposal by Mayor McFadden for the BIA to host a farmers’ market on Friday evenings during July and August (peak months for produce and vendors) would only detract from the success of our well-established monthly market.  Vendors will not want to do both markets.

We also question the notion that cottage-bound motorists will wish to take the extra travelling time to divert to Millbrook on Friday evenings.  As Ms. Rautiainen rightly points out, there are many other market options in cottage country during the summer season.

This is with regard to recent letters to the Times from the Chapman family questioning the accuracy of the Risk Assessment done on Glamorgan/Dranoel roads.   Mr. Chapman is a resident but also a director of KATVA so shouldn’t council be looking carefully at what the report says since one assumes the woman who wrote it has some expertise in this area, is being paid to do this and has no vested interest in the outcome?

Dranoel Road south of Syer Line has no ditches and in most places the road was cut through hills and therefore is banked.  There is literally nowhere for a walker, cyclist or rider to go when confronted with an ATV.  Creating shoulders would be costly and many mature trees would need to be cut down.  Not very eco-friendly.

In closing I would like to mention how amused I was at one of the items on the information KATVA passed out at their shows in Millbrook and Bethany.   KATVA came to a rural area and complained about livestock Methane emissions.  In what way does the important work of farming and feeding thousands of Ontarians in any way compare to the pass-time of ORVing?
