Dear Editor,
We want to thank the Millbrook Times for once again giving so much support to this year’s Zucchini Festival in its pages throughout the summer. A community-based event such as this could not happen without the support of people like you.
Despite our worst fears a gadzillion zucchinis magically showed up on the banks of Baxter Creek on the morning of the festival, the sun came out, and regardless of gale force gusts that would have had Dorothy scrambling for the coal cellar we had one of our best festivals ever! More than eighty kids’ boats and a dozen adult boats were built, decorated and raced down Baxter Creek, cakes and cupcakes were baked, poetry shared and the Scarecrow target satisfyingly pummelled by flying zucchini monkeys. We also want to thank Woodleigh Farms, Dan Dell and especially Circle Organics who beat all the local zucchini patches in Cavan/Monaghan and beyond to make sure we had enough veg for the festival. Also a big thanks to Brad at Millbrook PC for printing our posters and the township and staff for all of their support and help this year. Of course, the festival wouldn’t happen without all the volunteers that pitch in on the day of and we are especially grateful to all the people that came out to help us celebrate this much-maligned vegetable – it wouldn’t happen without you!
Yours sincerely,
The Millbrook Zucchini Festival Test Bake Ovens Organizing Committee

Dear Editor:
Re: Roadwork, County Rd 10
I realize that the county is responsible for this beautiful (at least “former bueatiful”) road, specifically the stretch between Garden Hill and Millbrook. I also realize that part of this stretch is maintained by Northumberland County which brings me to my point: Who on earth decided to put down tar and loose gravel on the Peterborough County stretch while the Northumberland stretch was improved with smooth, lined asphalt?? This road is a favourite with motorcycle enthusiasts, collector car enthusiasts, bicyclists, and others that love the drive and take pride in their vehicles. I can tell you the motorcycle and classic car traffic went down after the “tar and gravel” went down. I live within a stone’s throw (pun intended) from the “newly paved” road and as an avid motorcyclist, I am deeply disappointed. I realize the county and other local governments attempt to save taxpayers’ money but think of the money lost in tourism alone; people would take this road to drive to Millbrook for lunch etc. Well, I bet that declined. As well, in my humble opinion, it is a safety issue as well; loose gravel and two wheels don’t mix so well. Anyways, just my thoughts and rant for the year.
