The proposal for the new fire hall at $5 million to me as a lifelong resident and 34-year veteran (retired) of the Fire Department seems to me a little excessive. (Considering the proposed location, free land). Demolition of the existing gym would also eliminate the accommodation of large crowds at council meetings. (Perhaps that’s the plan). I would offer another solution that to this point has not been mentioned to my knowledge. Replace the Community Center, not the pie in the sky version with swimming pools, running tracks, tennis courts and whatever, but a usable facility that will suit the needs of our community, not a big city version. The present Arena could be converted into a Fire-Hall, it is handicap accessible, has washrooms, showers, office space, and meeting area(s). The upstairs has kitchen and washrooms, a large area that could in the future be converted to living quarters should the Department go full time. The ice surface would easily accommodate multiple vehicles. (Including EMS should the need arise). The east end could also be used as storage or an indoor training area. One thing this plan would not have is a $5 Million price tag! As well, the existing Fire hall could be used to replace the aging and decrepit Parks and Facilities building across from the Medical Center at little or no cost.
Just one man’s opinion, discuss among yourselves.
