Visitors to the Millbrook Farmers’ Market last month were treated to a display of grace and athleticism from members of the National Baton Corps.
This non-profit organization has been operating for more than 40 years, and offers recreational and competitive baton twirling and pomp pom (think cheerleading) lessons for girls of all ages and ability. They currently offer programs in Oshawa, but are starting a program at Millbrook South Cavan Public School this week.
Baton twirling is described as an exciting combination of dance, co-ordination, fitness and performance. The club offers programs for all ages and abilities, from tots to competitive twirlers. Classes are led by certified dance and baton coaches. No experience is required.
The club is inviting girls to give twirling a try at a free demonstration taking place this Friday October 4th from 6:30 to 7pm at Millbrook South Cavan Public School.
Members in the club’s competitive program have experienced considerable success and have earned spots as provincial, national and World Open Twirling Champions. This summer four of the club’s members travelled to Sweden to represent Canada at the first ever international Baton Twirling competition.
If you missed their display last month, there will be more opportunities in the future as the club plans to perform at more local events including the Santa Claus parade in December. Welcome to Millbrook, twirlers! KG
