December is here and so are the CMLibraries’ Holiday Cheer Programs and Activities!
The CMLibraries has a packed calendar of activities, crafts, and educational initiatives to support and engage our community this December. Many activities have a winter or festive theme.
Tuesday Night Movies are back! We will be screening the festive movie “The Man Who Invented Christmas” on Tuesday, December 7th at 6:30pm. The last time we hosted a Tuesday Night movie was March 3rd, 2020.
Our littlest patrons can build gross motor skills and begin making social connections with our Indoor Recess program. Stations will be set up where children can investigate problem solving opportunities while also getting creative. We also continue to offer opportunities for young children to explore literacy in a welcoming and social environment. Our Family Story Time continues to run at both branches. If you are looking for at home activities we also have grab and go Christmas crafts. Drop by your local branch to collect your kit.
Looking for a social connection while working on handmade Christmas gifts? Our Community Threads group is happy to be back and offering support, tips, connections, and supplies to local yarn enthusiasts. Bring your WIP (work in progress), or join us in the Project of the Month-making a scarf! We have supported patrons who were brand new to knitting to those looking to take on new challenges like socks!
Our early literacy tip of the month is to focus on the sounds of letters, not just learning the letter names or alphabet. Letter names are important, but the sounds that letters make are even more valuable. Letter sounds are the building blocks to spelling and reading! You can easily cover both of these areas when investigating print materials by reading words and highlighting the sound at the start of the word, and identifying the letter name. The way you introduce letters is also important as some letters have a higher frequency than others. Again, repetition is necessary to ensure these skills are mastered.
Please note that we will be closed at the end of December. We will be open on Thursday, December 23rd until 5:00pm, then from December 24th to January 3rd the library will be closed. Our virtual branch will be fully available during this closure. If you require assistance navigating these offerings please contact your local branch.
