Garden Club Speaker To Discuss the Role of Native Plants in the Garden

Gardening with Native Plants will be the subject of the Millbrook & Area Garden Club’s meeting on Wednesday June 5th when Paul LaPorte will speak on the topic “Building Biodiversity with Native Plants”.

Paul will discuss the definitive role that native plants have in the life cycle of insects/pollinators and the successive food chain that is supported by this relationship. He will also discuss the definition of a native plant, provide an example of how to establish a native plant garden, and give a brief overview of the North American Native Plant Society.

Paul LaPorte is the owner of Ephemeral Ark Nursery (specializing in native woodland species) and a consultant on ecological gardening and design. Living in the Greenbelt of the GTA, he has been able to carefully manage and study numerous native plant communities. Paul possesses an impressive knowledge of Ontario native plant species and their communities and fosters them in his own gardens. He is the current Chair of the Ontario Native Plant Growers Association, a member of Kawartha Conservation’s BlueScape Steering Committee, the past President of the North American Native Plant Society and the past Vice Chair of the Scugog Environmental Advisory Committee. Paul is a regular speaker for numerous horticultural societies, nature clubs and regional conservation authorities on the importance of native plants to our ecology.
