Garden Club Kicks off 2020 with Presentation About Rain Gardens

Everyone is welcome to come out for the Millbrook & Area Garden Club’s first meeting of 2020 on Wednesday, March 4th. The topic for the evening will be “Rain Gardens” presented by guest speaker Holly Shipclark, stewardship coordinator for Kawartha Conservation. We will learn how to control water run off to create a rain garden, suitable soil, and plants, etc.

Our second meeting of 2020 will be on Wednesday, April 1st, when Hazel Cook of Blossom Hill Nursery, Peterborough, will give a presentation on “Growing Peonies and Delphiniums”. Blossom Hill Nursery grows many hardy perennials, but their specialties are their award winning Peonies and Delphiniums. The peonies are propagated by division or grafting, and they have developed their own line of hardier Delphiniums with stronger stems and larger florets. We look forward to Hazel sharing some of her secrets of success growing these two specialties.

The Millbrook & Area Garden Club is working towards supporting a fledgling garden club starting up in Nain, Nunatsiavut, Labrador; the goal being to supplement their very costly food supply with fresh garden vegetables. Donations towards this project would be gratefully received and would be used to ship much needed supplies such as seed starting equipment, garden tools, soil supplements, ground covers and hoops, etc.

The Millbrook & Area Garden Club meets at 7:30 p.m. in St. Thomas Anglican Church Hall, 16 Centre St., Millbrook. Please park in the back parking lot. Admission is $3.00 at the door. Please bring your own mug. For more information contact Glen Spurrell, nate@nexicom.net, 705-932-1231.
