For the Love of Lifelong Learning

It’s February – and that means all things love, romance, and an abundance of hearts.

The CMLibraries wants to share with you our newest love: STEM Kits and Manipulatives. STEM kits are now available to loan from both branches! Choose from a variety of kits and manipulatives that target a range of ages and abilities. Foster a love of learning through the application of science, technology, engineering, and math, by using creativity and problem solving.  Stop by your local branch to see what kits and manipulatives we have available, or call your local branch to reserve one today! These kits can be borrowed for up to 3 weeks and allow our younger patrons the opportunity to get hands on with their learning.

What book do you absolutely love? Our staff and patrons would love to hear about your most loved read. Is there an author that you simply adore? Let us know on our Facebook page. Look for our Valentine’s Day themed post to share all your top picks.

Our early literacy tip of the month is to go on a sound scavenger hunt! Focusing on the sounds the letters make is far more important than being able to name the letters. Here’s how to bring this tip to life. Beginner level: Hunt for the sounds at the start of words. Can you find an item nearby or think of an item that starts with the sound /m/? Choose sounds that you can stretch out (m, s, f, n, v) as opposed to short, clipped sounds (t, d, c, b, g). Advanced level: Hunt for sounds in the middle, or end of words. Can you find an item that ends with the sound /p/? You can even try giving more additional sounds based clues. This item rhymes with the word ‘pup’. Ready to take it to the next level? You can have your child search for sounds in the title of a book. Have fun hunting for sounds!

A couple of important notes for this month. Programming during February will continue to be limited due to COVID restrictions. Drop ins are welcome, numbers permitting. Also, The CM Libraries will delay opening on Thursday, February 24th – we will open at 2pm. The staff will be taking First Aid training for the morning.

As always there are more details and activities available in our monthly newsletter, available in print format at your local branch or on our website. For more information follow our Facebook page (@cavanmonaghanlibraries), our website: cmlibraries.ca or call your local branch (Bruce Johnston Branch: 705.741.1253, Millbrook Branch: 705.932.2919).

Editor’s note:  This is the last submission from CM Library Coordinator Melanie Crouch, who is moving on to teach at North Cavan Public School.  Thank you, Melanie, for your interesting and thoughtful submissions showing us how the library offers our community so much more than books.  We look forward to hearing about the adventures of your students.
