Footprints on Our Hearts

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

(1 Thessalonians 5:18)

Thanksgiving is coming. In Canada, we connect our Thanksgiving celebrations to the big family feast. That’s good fun, but for me, the best part is being surrounded by people I love: family and friends. Over the years, loving people have brought God’s love to me in abundance. I am grateful. We human beings need that spiritual food.

This year, you may be hungry for loving interaction. Whether your family are few and far away, or grief has taken over your heart, or even if you are overwhelmed with people in your life, you may be asking, “What have I to be thankful for?”

I believe God, from time to time, presents to all of us people who bring precious moments of love. Whether we eat alone, or at the local soup kitchen, or participate in a family potluck, we can give thanks for those precious moments with people that we have enjoyed. We can be thankful for memories.

Hanging by our front door, we have a beautiful piece of framed needlework made with love by a long-time friend. It reminds me every day, “Some people come into our lives and quickly go… Some stay awhile and leave footprints on our hearts. And we are never, ever the same.” (written by Flavia Weedn)

This year as Thanksgiving Day approaches, I am counting the blessings of people who have brought that transforming love into my life. Family, my husband, Tom, friends, sometimes even strangers, both children and adults, have showered me with blessings. Without them, there have been times when I would truly have given up and walked the road of suicide. Without them, I would have felt spiritual starvation. They are with me still, even if in memory alone.

Yes, God has showered me with blessings. I am truly grateful. Regardless of whatever is going on in your life right now, take the time to let your heart fill with memories, memories of people – teachers, ministers, neighbours, friends, family – who have contributed to the goodness in your life. Give thanks. Feast on the spiritual food God has given you.
