First Annual Fill a Truck Event a Great Success

On Sunday March 6th, The Old Millbrook School EarlyON Child and Family Centre in partnership with One City Peterborough hosted their first “Fill a Truck” Event.

Nancy Hurley, the Centre Administrator for The Old Millbrook School EarlyON Child and Family Centre and San Williamson, the Outreach Coordinator for One City planned this event together.  The idea came from ongoing conversations the two friends had been having for quite some time around the increased need for warm adult clothing, blankets and sleeping bags for people experiencing precarious housing and homelessness in Peterborough County.

On the day of the event, staff and volunteers from both organizations came together with a willingness to help and an excitement to be able to hold an event such as this for the first time in two years.  Nancy Hurley hopes to be able to plan to hold this event annually in order to support the growing need for these types of tangible resources.  The next event will most likely be in November when the weather starts to cool down again and be held in November each year moving forward.

The timeline between the planning of the event and holding the event was quite quick but it didn’t seem to matter.  The community met the call to action in an incredible way.  The event resulted in filling not one but two trucks of donations to take back to One City for clients to access on a daily basis. Both Organizations want to express their appreciation to the community for their response.  It was a wonderful reminder that when we come together, great things can happen.
