On Sunday, October 2nd, the Fire Department was celebrating a few things.

First at the Municipal offices was the unveiling of the new Trailer purchased on their behalf by the local Firefighters’ Association, followed by an Open House event at both stations in the township. Visitors were treated to hot dogs, drinks and red fire hats, and some interesting entertainment. At Fire Hall #2 located in Mount Pleasant, Firefighting staff offered graphic demonstrations in their Fire Prevention message, showing what not to do in the event of a kitchen grease fire. Using a small propane element and frying pan, staff in full protective gear created a grease fire and then proceeded to apply water to it as one might be tempted to do to douse a kitchen fire. Of course, instead of extinguishing the blaze, this action prompted a dramatic flash of fire, dramatically increasing the danger. Point taken.

Firefighting staff also demonstrated the use of their extraction equipment on a damaged vehicle to show how it is used in motor vehicle accidents where motorists are trapped in their vehicles. Both activities drew an attentive audience. Also on hand was a member of the Peterborough police force, and the youngsters in particular enjoyed climbing into the Fire truck and seeing the inside of a police cruiser – from the front seat. Perhaps the event will inspire them to offer their services as future Emergency personnel for the township. KG
