Shona Steel provides a range of services to seniors and their families to help them live safely and comfortably in their own homes. to help them live safely and comfortably in their own homes.

With more than twenty years of counselling, home support and Personal Service work experience under her belt, Shona Steele believes she understands her clients.

Working as a care provider for private firms, she often felt that the needs of her clients often went beyond what the private home care service company could provide.  Sometimes the schedule was less than ideal for the client, or the clock dictated a departure that was inconvenient and upsetting to them.  She felt that as an independent care provider, she could mitigate those issues.

Last November, she decided to go out on her own.  Her business called Compassionate Care provides in-home support to seniors, helping them to safely remain in their homes.  One of her first decisions was to set a one-hour buffer between appointments to allow her flexibility to finish her visits at a time she feels is appropriate without leaving her next client waiting.

A certified Personal Service Worker, Shona provides non-medical care and assistance to seniors and their families to help seniors stay in their homes a bit longer.  Among the services she provides are personal hygiene, transfers, light housekeeping, meal preparation, appointment scheduling and companionship.  Her objective is to make her clients safe and comfortable while promoting as much autonomy as possible.

It’s often not just the elderly client that needs support, but also their caregivers.  Shona provides respite support to give caregivers some needed time off to rejuvenate.  A round of golf or a meal with friends can help them sustain the sometimes intense pressure of watching someone they love decline.

A certified Death Doula, Shona brings palliative care experience and a sensitivity and compassion that eases the stress of end of life issues.  If final arrangements have not been made, she sometimes acts as a liaison between the family and the funeral home, removing the emotion and the pressure of these final decisions.

Shona spent many years as an addiction counsellor, where she learned to separate herself from her clients.  As engaged as she is while she is caring for them, for her own mental health she has learned to turn it off as she walks out the door.

Based in Bethany, Shona is ready to support seniors and their families in the area.  She offers free consultations to clarify the needs and expectations of potential customers.  She bills on an hourly basis with flexible schedules designed to suit the customer.  To learn more, contact Shona at pswcompassionatecare@gmail.com or call her at 905-442-2890.  KG
