Council Column Returns

Following a long standing tradition, we are bringing back the monthly Council Column, which will give the opportunity to Council Members to communicate directly with our readers about the issues they are facing on our behalf. We kick off this feature with an update from Mayor Scott McFadden, who provides the following information.

Your new Council has now been in office for a year, and it’s been a very busy year indeed. It has been an honour and pleasure to serve this Township alongside my fellow Councillors, Deputy Mayor John Fallis, Councillor Jordan Landry, Councillor Ryan Huntley, and Councillor Tim Belch. All our Council meetings continue to be live streamed to the internet, to be viewed live, or at a later date, accessible through the Township website www.CavanMonaghan.net. I will be hosting a Town Hall meeting at the Galerie Q this Friday, Nov. 6th from 7 pm – 9 pm to reflect on the past year and discuss the years ahead. I would encourage everyone to attend, and bring with you topics for an open discussion.

In the 2015 budget, the overall residential tax rate increase was 2.12%, which consists of the municipal levy, county levy, and education levy.

With the introduction of curbside garbage collection in the Cavan Ward starting on May 1st, 2015, the entire Township now has both recycling and garbage collection. Each bag still requires a bag tag to be attached to it both at curbside and at the Transfer Station. Please continue your efforts to reduce your overall waste, in order to extend the lifespan of the Bensfort Road Landfill.

With the support and organization by the Cavan Maple Leaf Soccer Club and in collaboration with the Township, a fantastic Fireworks display once again returned to Maple Leaf Park on July 1st.

In May, a new 2015 International Pumper Tanker truck was put into service in the Fire Department. This vehicle replaces the 1994 Tanker at Station Two in Mount Pleasant.

During this past summer, you may have noticed that street lights throughout the Township were upgraded to new LED lights, conserving electricity and reducing costs.

The Public Works Department replaced all the street signs throughout the Cavan and North Monaghan Wards as well as new heritage focused signs within the village of Millbrook. All these new street signs now meet the Provincial guidelines.

Surface treatment was completed this past summer on Challice Line, Elgar Drive, Hayes Line, and Slurrey Seal was completed on Jack Lane, Stewart Line, and Dranoel Road. In conjunction with the County of Peterborough, the Township has completed new walkways and railings on the Distillery Street Bridge and capital watermain works at the newly constructed culvert on King Street.

The expansion of the Wastewater Treatment Plant capacity has continued throughout the summer. There has also been considerable construction along County Road 10, Tupper Street and Centennial Lane as Public Works and R.V. Anderson Associates have been busy with construction of both Watermain and Sanitary Sewer. The construction has also included a new Municipal Water Storage Tank located behind the Municipal Office. All of these projects have been designed to support the development planned for the lands around the existing Municipal Office.

Effective Oct. 1st, policing services are now being provided in the Township by the Peterborough Police Service. You may have already noticed their increased presence in downtown Millbrook, as well as along the roads throughout the Township. They have also been attending the local schools in the Township, performing mach lockdown exercises.

There is now free Wi-Fi access being provided at the Millbrook Arena. A big thank you goes out to Wayne Blaby and his team at Computer Solutions “Plus” for their generous contribution.

Upcoming events in the Township include Remembrance Day in Millbrook on November 11th, and Christmas in the Village Events running from Dec. 3rd to Dec. 6th.

I’m always interested in hearing your feedback, so please attend my Town Hall meeting this Friday Nov. 6th at the Galerie Q in Cavan, from 7 pm – 9 pm. Alternatively, you can always email me at mayor@cavanmonaghan.net or call me at 705-201-1026.
