As the world gets crazier, it’s comforting to look around our community and feel grateful for what has been created here.
Seeing images of the planet from the Artemis II space craft helped put somethings into perspective. Many events last month encouraged us to appreciate and respect our natural environment, offering tools and insight into how we can contribute to the protection of our natural world. The economics of loving local are also reinforcing that trend, as transportation costs make long-distant travel and off-season imported food more expensive. If you don’t have a green thumb, there are plenty of local producers who would be happy to supply you with fresh, local food. Instead of travelling abroad, there are also many local destinations to discover, with discounted and sometimes free admission to many national parks sites, museums, galleries and historic sites again this summer.
During the mission, NASA pilot Victor Glover reminded us that “no matter where you’re from or what you look like, we’re all one people.” As the crew prepared to go out of communication as they travelled behind the moon, they acknowledged their support from below, saying they felt the love from the earth and wanted to send it right back. Glover said, “to all of you down there on Earth and around Earth – we love you from the moon.” Back at you. Perhaps now is the time to show instead of tell.
