What Community Looks Like

Residents on Fern ridge Drive in the Highlands subdivision on the south side of Fallis Line started what they hope becomes an annual tradition in their neighbourhood: a block party to welcome summer. Residents in the Highlands are known for their sociability. Anyone who has ventured into the area on Hallowe’en has been greeted with treats for kids and adults, extensive sometimes gruesome displays including dry ice and elaborate costumes, friendly chats and lots of treats. Christmas displays are equally elaborate. Perhaps it’s a friendly competition?

In this edition we celebrate some long-standing traditions in our community, from national celebrations such as Canada Day and the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Legion, to family traditions that delivered the 175th Millbrook Fair. Traditions don’t have to be grand; they often start out small, but when they hit the right note, they can become very powerful community builders.

These traditions are all made possible by the efforts of local individuals who bring imagination, energy and commitment to these events. In these days of social isolation and polarization, traditions are more important than ever. Thank you to volunteers who direct their time and energy to help unite us by pushing us to think beyond our comfortable social circles to embrace and support the broader community. Happy Canada Day.
