Comment – August 2024

The excitement of watching Team Canada compete in Paris has lost a bit of its lustre as the Olympic Women’s Soccer Team scandal deals a blow to our national pride.  We don’t think of ourselves as cheaters, nor should we, but it seems we are not immune to the pressure to “win”.  Let’s hold onto our civility and fair-mindedness in the days ahead.  Take time to enjoy these fleeting moments of summer and rejuvenate.  We will need to be a bit chill in order to ignore the onslaught of ugly rhetoric that is likely to ratchet up this fall in US election discussions.  That behaviour will surely encourage us to distinguish ourselves as a country where we can agree to disagree without demonizing each other.  KG
