Cavan-Monaghan Libraries – October 2023

“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.”

L. M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables

*October is Dyslexia Awareness Month! Stop by either branch to have a look at our decodable books and to tell us your dyslexia success stories.*

Now that the weather is starting to cool and the leaves are starting to change, it’s easy to see that fall is well underway. We had a very productive September, getting everything ready for our Seniors Community Grant to officially start, while also ensuring the smooth running of the rest of our library programs. Please see our separate Seniors Community Grant article for more information.

We have added a variety of Programming to our schedule this fall. Join us at the Bruce Johnston Branch on Tuesdays for After School Programming! We are focusing on facilitated play while trying to meet as many needs and interests as possible. We have also included Junior Mathematicians (Wednesdays in Millbrook) and Junior Scientists (Thursdays at the Bruce Johnston Branch). Both programs aim to make learning fun through games and experiments while also ensuring that children are learning the necessary skills for their development. We continue to have Storytime on Tuesdays at the Bruce Johnston Branch and Fridays in Millbrook.

On Saturdays in Millbrook, we now have Indoor Play! To encourage hands-on activity, staff will be around to facilitate interaction between children and the different activities we have that don’t always come out. We have also included a Tween/teen Book Club on the fourth Saturday of each month! Email Courtney at tutor@cmlibraries.ca for more information.

October is “spooky season”! Join us at the Bruce Johnston Branch for a variety of fun and exciting Halloween Activities for the kids on Saturday, October 28th! We will also have trick or treating and dress up at both branches on Tuesday, October 31st.

We are offering a Home Alone and Babysitting Course this fall! The Home Alone Course is for children 10 and up and provides children with the necessary skills and knowledge to be safe and responsible when home alone for short periods of time. This course will run on Saturday, October 21st and Saturday, October 28th from 10:00am-1:30pm.

The Babysitter course is for children 12 and up and covers child development, safety, first aid, and CPR. This course will run from 5:30-8:00pm on Tuesday, October 17th and Tuesday, October 24th. There will be a break for Halloween and then we will start back up again on Tuesday, November 7th and finish on Tuesday, November 14th. *All sessions are required for certification and cost $50 per child. Please contact Melody at heartcert@outlook.com for more information.*

The Fall Workshop segment of our Community Threads is well underway! Thank you to Marie who kicked us off with her introduction to watercolor painting in September. In October we welcome back Andréa to demonstrate how to needle felt and to further help those who have attended her workshops before. If you’re looking for more crafting groups, check out our Knotty Knitters at the Bruce Johnston Branch on the fourth Tuesday of every month. We also have our Cookbook Book Club, which will be making recipes that focus on pumpkin flavouring. For more information on our Programming (including what we’re reading for our Adult Book Club and Adult Storytime) check out our newsletter!
