Cavan Monaghan Hosts Inaugural Earth Day Event

The Township of Cavan Monaghan will be hosting their first event celebrating Earth Day on Tuesday, April 22, 2025 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Led by the Township’s Sustainability Advisory Committee, the event has an exciting line-up of vendors who can provide information and resources on a wide range of climate friendly actions to enable residents and businesses to make informed environmentally friendly choices.

Skilled volunteers with the Repair Café will be on site to mend, fix and repair articles of clothing small appliances and electronics. Residents thinking of buying an electric vehicle can meet and talk to members of the Kawartha EV society who will bring their personal electric vehicles for viewing. Representatives from Green Up will be on hand to provide advice on various energy saving programs.

This Earth Day event is one of a number of educational initiatives the Committee has embarked upon since its inception. In the spring of 2024, a Rain Barrel program was implemented as a way to encourage and promote water conservation. Residents of the Township can purchase, high quality plastic rain barrels for only $30 (while supplies last). In late fall, the Township partnered with Home Hardware to offer a weather stripping kit to assist residents in making their homes more energy efficient. Kits are available to purchase for $10 at the Township office (while supplies last).

“The mission of the Committee is to support climate change action plans through simple, affordable and effective initiatives that everyone can take part in,” says Deputy Mayor and Committee Member Ryan Huntley. “From tree planting to rain barrels to growing native plants, each small action you take contributes to a larger climate solution.”

The Township will kick off their Tree Planting program as part of the event. Residents can place an order for a native tree sapling for their property. Ten different species of trees are available to purchase in 2-gallon pots for $10.00. “Studies show that planting just one mature tree can absorb up to 48 pounds of carbon dioxide per year, while rain barrels can save hundreds of gallons of water annually per household, depending on rainfall amounts,” says Committee Chair Leslie Bilcox. “Imagine the impact if hundreds of households participate, we can begin to see the results of our efforts. When many people take small steps together, the collective effect is powerful.”

This event is free to attend and will take place in the Community Hall of the Cavan Monaghan Community Centre starting at 5:00 p.m. For more information, please contact: Brigid Ayotte Economic Development & Communications Officer T: 705-932-9339 E:bayotte@cavanmonaghan.net
