Bill Shaw continues the legacy of his late wife as the new appointed Cavan-Monaghan Councilor.

Bill Shaw was as surprised as anyone at the speed with which he assumed the Cavan Councillor position that suddenly became vacant upon the passing of incumbent Cathy Moore, his late wife.

Cathy Moore will be remembered for her many contributions to the community.

Shaw had never been particularly interested in politics, but he understood there was work his late wife would have like to finish.  He called to inquire about the possibility of taking her place on Council an hour before the January 24th meeting when the vacancy was formally declared.  At the following meeting on February 7th, he was sworn in to represent Cavan residents for the remainder of the term after a unanimous vote.

Shaw understood Cathy’s commitment to her job and spent many evenings and weekends supporting her on the campaign trail in 2018.  He looks forward to working with his colleagues on staff and council to continue to work towards the objectives of his late wife.  The support he has received from fellow council members and township staff has eased his transition into this new role.

Among the many challenges facing the community, he sees the threat of border challenges from the City of Peterborough as the most pressing.   He understands the challenge of attracting candidates to municipal politics which he attributes to the low pay, the challenge of meeting growing taxpayer expectations.  Those who choose to serve in his mind have altruistic motives and are committed to working for the betterment of their communities.

Despite his misgivings, he has not immediately ruled out a run for office in the next election.  In the meantime, Shaw continues to work as a technical engineer at OPG while serving on Council until the end of the term, where he intends to represent Cavan residents to the best of his ability. This sounds like Cathy talking.  Welcome aboard, Bill!  KG
