Pam Kaur was eleven years old when she moved to Canada from a remote Indian village called Basoli where she lived with her family in a small, one-room mud house.
Opportunities in her home town were rare, particularly for girls, but Pam brought to her new home hopes of having a better life. She learned to cook watching her grandmother transform simple ingredients into dishes bursting with flavour. It was a labour of love with an output that was appreciated by her family and friends, and a source of pride and respect for her grandmother. Her culinary training was also shaped by her father who brought his Indian flavours to Canada in Toronto restaurants. Her products are based on recipes handed down through generations.
She took a giant leap of faith to follow the family culinary tradition and left a position in a major healthcare company to follow her dream, creating her own food business with partner Taz called Basoli Sauces. It’s a decision she does not regret.
Basoli Sauces offers products that bring the traditional tastes of India to the home cook. Using top quality, organic ingredients, including spices sourced from small-scale farmers in India, Pam creates a wide variety of preservative-free sauces, chutneys and pickles to replicate the home-style flavours of her family’s recipes prepared in a licensed facility in Colborne.
The products allow the novice or experienced cook to explore Indian cuisine at home and include familiar sauces including curry, Butter or Madras chicken to more unusual products such as mint coriander chutney or mango pickles. They also have several one pot dishes ready to heat and serve with rice, pasta or naan.
The products are sold in farmers’ markets in Cobourg, Port Perry, Whitby, Brooklin and Oshawa.
