At Your Libraries – June 2022

What an interesting week! Who had a “multi-day power outage” in your list of what could go wrong this year?

The Cavan-Monaghan Libraries stepped up by offering access to Wi-Fi and electricity at the Millbrook Branch on the Monday of the long weekend and offering full service through the Millbrook Branch the rest of the week. The Bruce Johnston Branch regained power late on Thursday and was ready to open on Saturday. A huge thanks to Library staff who came in despite not having electricity at home.

Like everyone else, we would like to express our thanks to the community for pulling together during this time and to the Hydro crews who have worked tirelessly to make the restorations.

The month of June is shaping up to be busy at the CM Library as our regular activities continue plus some new ones are being added.

Storytime continues on Thursdays at 10:15am at the Bruce Johnston Branch. A new outdoor learning trail is set up every week around the Community Garden in Millbrook. Join Courtney at 10:15 on Fridays at the Community Garden. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, the activity moves inside.

We have some volunteers to help with our Reading Buddies Program. Now we are looking for the “Little Buddies”. A registration form is on the website. We are hoping that this program will start late June and run through the summer.

Spring Time Yoga will be continuing but with a new date and time. Come and try “Gentle (Beginner) Flow Yoga) at the Bruce Johnston Branch on Tuesdays (starting June 7th) at 5:30pm. Again, the registration form is on the website.

Community Threads will meet on Saturday June 18th at the Bruce Johnston Branch and Wednesday, June 22th at the Millbrook Branch (11-1).

A brand-new program that Courtney is starting at the CM Library is an Adult Social Group for individuals who have intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. This group will provide the opportunity to get to know other people in your community, as well as to participate in a variety of fun activities. The group will meet for about an hour at the Bruce Johnston Branch on Tuesdays (starting June 7th) at 4:00.

Also, on June 7th, at the Millbrook Branch, our Toonie Tuesday movie will be “The eyes of Tammy Faye”. The movie starts at 6:30 and is rated PG-13.

June 21st is National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada. From June 14th until June 21st, the CM Library will have a variety of take-home activities to celebrate the contributions of Indigenous Peoples.

We will be hosting a small silent auction (at the Millbrook Branch) with bidding happening from June 14th-June 30th. Funds raised will be to offset being a “Fine Free Library”. A decadent Godiva Chocolate basket and a boxed set of “The New Yorker Encyclopedia of Cartoons” are two of the items that will be available.

In our return to “what we used to do”, the Millbrook Branch will open on Sunday, June 26th during the Farmers’ Market – market goers will be able to check out the Book Sale and the silent auction.

Stay tuned to our Facebook page and website for updates and information about our upcoming summer programs.
