This fabric will soon be transformed into warm blankets by members of the Anglican Church Women’s group of St. Thomas church in Millbrook for distribution to customers of the One Roof Community Centre in Peterborough, which is an outreach effort for their vulnerable clients.

Last winter, One Roof Community Centre was collecting donations of warm clothing including coats, hats, socks and mitts to distribute to their customers.

It is one of the many services the outreach program offers to people facing challenges of homelessness, food insecurity and social isolation in Peterborough.  A Ministry of St. John’s Anglican Church in Peterborough, it also offers daily meals, primary health care and life skills development programs while advocating for systemic change to break down barriers that exclude many of our more vulnerable citizens.  The women’s group of St. Thomas Anglican Church in Millbrook was among those responding to this need.  While dropping off some of the donations, they learned that the organization was looking for blankets to offer to their homeless clientele.  It got some of them thinking…

Several women retrieved their unused purchases of fleece fabric, thinking it could be transformed into blankets.  This week, they will begin to construct blankets which will consist of two layers of fleece tied together- no sewing required!  Smaller fabric pieces will be stitched together in colour blocks.  The blankets will be distributed by One Roof staff and volunteers, helping those facing transient living arrangements with their own permanent source of warmth.  Well done, ladies!  KG
