A Treasure for Landowners, A Treasure for Ontario

Workshop This Weekend on Managing Private Woodlots:
You’ve seen the stands of trees standing so unnaturally in evenly-spaced, soldierlike formations south along County Rd. 10 and Highway 115. These “forests” are likely the product of the Ministry of Natural Resource’s Woodland Improvement Program of the 1970’s and 80’s, when 100,000-150,000 seedlings were planted annually in each county. Ontario boasts a rich forest heritage, with over 71 million hectares (175 million acres) of forest, the equivalent land area of Germany, Italy and the Netherlands combined. Much of this natural resource is government controlled- over 90% of Ontario forests are provincially owned and managed.
