Last week the community bade farewell to Dr. Rosana Salvaterra who leaves her position as  Medical Officer of Health for the Peterborough area which she has held since 2008.  In the last year and a half, Dr. Salvaterra has been the face of the community’s battle against the spread of COVID-19, providing regular media updates, speaking to local governments and First Nation community leaders and chairing the local vaccine taskforce.  With her support, the community has achieved the vaccination target of 80% coverage.  Her exceptional leadership was recognized by her peers earlier this year when she received the Distinguished Service Award from the Association of Local Public Health Agencies.

Our loss is Alberta’s gain.   Dr. Salvaterra joins Alberta Health as their Deputy Chief Medical Officer of Health next week.  She is looking forward to this new challenge, where she will support Dr. Deena Hinshaw in fulfilling the provincial public health mandate in that province which is currently facing serious challenges to its health care system.

Dr. Thomas Piggott will join Peterborough Public Health effective December 1st as the new Medical Officer of Health.  He brings a variety of domestic and international experience as a public health and preventative medicine specialist and family physician.  He arrives from Labrador where he served as Medical Officer of Health and VP lead for Population Health and Rural and Remote Health in the northern region of Labrador-Grenfell Health.  His international experience includes work as a field doctor in the Democratic Republic of Congo with the charitable organization Doctors Without Borders.
