A Call to Action

Local residents are challenging others to join their Trash Initiative and pick up garbage that has accumulated along the roads over the winter.

Call it an invitation, a challenge, or a gesture of care and thanks to this beautiful place we share, but whatever the motivation, we think Spring is an ideal time to show our respect by doing a little picking up, and hope you do too.

One day this past week, two of us set out with clear garbage bags, sturdy gloves and a pick-up tool each and walked two kilometres of our township road, to grab all the things that don’t belong in our ditches and along our roadsides.  We filled three large clear bags with trash, another with recyclable cans and plastic bottles, and two, yes two, with beer and cooler cans and bottles.  We also collected a toilet tank cover and a trash can lid.

It isn’t a glamorous task.  However, it does involve getting fresh air and exercise and allows for lots of conversation.  It does take a little effort to keep spirits up as fast food cups and containers, cigarette packs and a striking number of Blue Light and Vodka Seltzer cans are fished out and bagged.   There’s lots of time to reflect on who tosses all this out as they drive by.  We are in our 70s and so we know there are two generations after us familiar with the Reduce Reuse Recycle mantra and the concept of respecting the environment.  Or so we’d hoped.

Millbrook Farm and Pet Supply were happy to get the 75 cans and bottles (we rinsed them before delivering) and the Transfer Station attendant welcomed our bags of salvaged trash and recyclables. On our way there, the state of the ditches on Larmer, east of County Road 10, caused us to hope that others will take up this challenge or respond to the invitation to get out and show Mother Nature a little love.
