Doodling… Dandy Performance Enhancer For The Brain?

by: Karen Graham
I’m a teacher, so I admit up front that when I see a student doodling in my class, I am offended. Am I not entertaining enough? (It’s a rhetorical question.) Like most of my colleagues, I assume that when someone is doodling, they are not listening to my words of wisdom. Now I realize I am probably wrong. A 2009 study of college students in Plymouth, England demonstrated that students who doodle in class retain almost 30% more information than their more restful classmates, particularly in subjects such as science, or where the information was “tediously delivered”. (Point taken.)
