EarlyON Centre Gets Help to Replace Floors

At the October 5th Council Meeting, EarlyON Family Centre’s Managing Director Nancy Hurley came with a request for help in replacing the flooring of their facility which is located in the lower level of the Old Millbrook School.

The current flooring has been in place for more than twenty years and is lifting, creating tripping hazards for their young visitors. In September the organization received a grant from the Ministry of Education funneled through the City of Peterborough was not anticipated and therefore had not been allocated. This funding was insufficient to cover the total cost of the floor replacement which is estimated to be roughly $13,000. This funding must be spent by the end of the calendar year, and the organization is short roughly $5,000 to complete this project and sought support from the municipality.

Fortunately a small pool of funds remain from the federal and provincial grants totaling $511,750 for projects at the Old Millbrook School to upgrade and rehabilitate its accessibility, doors, windows, roofing, mechanical components and flooring projects which were approved in May and are now complete. Any funds not used for these projects must be returned to the grant providers. Council agreed to provide these funds to allow the organization to complete this project.

EarlyON Child and Family Centre is a non-profit organization dedicated to the care, nurture and well-being of children.

It supports early learning and development by providing a variety of high-quality, play-based programs free of charge for young families. Programs are designed and delivered by early childhood professionals to engage parents and caregivers, helping them meet the needs of their youngsters. It is funded by the Ministry of Education through the City of Peterborough.

The floor replacement will take place over the Christmas holidays to minimize the disruption to the program users.
