New Battery Recycling Collection Program

New drop-off locations: Municipal office, both libraries, and CMCC.

Changes to the management of waste have affected provincial battery recycling operations.

The current operator who has accepted battery waste from the collection at the Transfer Station has been providing this service at no charge but this is about to change. After researching the alternatives, the municipality has decided to enter into an agreement with an organization called Call2RecycleCanada Inc. to pick up used consumer batteries from five collection locations throughout the township.

This agreement replaces current battery diversion efforts at no cost to the municipality. In fact the program would generate a small revenue stream which will be directed to the Environmental Services budget to offset costs of other divertible waste programs. The revenue is calculated based on the weight of batteries collected. At current diversion levels from the single drop-off location at the Transfer Station, this waste would generate up to $900 per year. Staff expect the volume of diverted batteries will increase under this initiative with the added convenience of additional drop-off locations at the municipal office, both library branches and the CMCC.
