A Special Day in a Brand New Way

From Blocks & Blooms 2024, a garden view at Silver Creek.

By Celia Hunter

Every three years the Millbrook Cavan Historical Society (MCHS) puts on a big party we call Blocks & Blooms.

For June 2027, a year from now, we are thinking outside the box, and we are inviting you to re-imagine this event with us.

Yes, we want to honour the best of what Blocks & Blooms represents: an opportunity for friends, neighbours and visitors to enjoy the colours and contours of gardens and outdoor spaces; the traditional airing of hand-crafted quilts, both heirloom and contemporary; and up-close encounters with some of our most interesting examples of built heritage, and the stories that go with them.

Next June’s Blocks & Blooms will be an invitation to explore. In Cavan Monaghan we have deep agricultural roots that give us not just magnificent views of forest and farmland but also inspiring stories of innovation and productivity. It is in our rural roots that we discover the culture and creativity of quilting. Our local history is illustrated by our farmhouses and one-room schools, heritage barns and community spaces.

We are looking for hosts. For Blocks & Blooms 2027, we borrow the catchphrase of former columnist for the Times, Glen Spurrell, and invite everyone to “Get Out!” and explore this place we call home.

If you and your property have a story to tell, please let us know. For just one day, Saturday, June 26, 2027, we invite you to share, with fellow township residents and visitors from who-knows-where, a beautiful garden, a glorious view, a heritage building, a story of rural resilience.
