Retired RCMP Rod Taylor with members of Friendship Force
Retired RCMP Rod Taylor visited members of Friendship Force in May where he told them about his experience as a law enforcement officer.
At first the group was fascinated by Rod’s colourful uniform as he explained the significance of the badges, crests on his jacket and the spurs on his boots (for decorative purposes only). Some wanted to understand the qualifications required to become a law enforcement officer, imaging a future in uniform. Rod described the nature of the work, explaining that some cases take years to resolve and sometimes the conclusions are less than satisfactory. There were also a few predictable questions about weapon and shooting. As the conversation concluded, one young woman commented that she had never met a police officer before, which resonated with the audience and seemed to suggest a new confidence in dealing with law enforcement representatives.
Friendship Force organizers invite community members from a variety of backgrounds and experiences to share their stories with members of this adult Autistic group to introduce them to new people and experience. These visits help Friendship Force members to feel engaged and connected to their community, while visitors become better acquainted with them as well.
