Jump Into June

By Courtney Spence

The weather is finally starting to warm up with more consistent temperatures! As Becky likes to say, “we are all just plants who want the warm sunshine.” Although it is tempting to spend as much time outside as possible, we have a variety of fun and exciting activities happening at the CMLibraries this month.

June is Pride Month! To celebrate, we will be making rainbow popcorn and pride buttons as part of our Tween/Teen programming on Tuesday, June 16th at 4:30pm at our Bruce Johnston Branch. Participants will make rainbow popcorn by melting a variety of coloured candy melts and adding them to bowls of popcorn. While that is setting, we will get out the button machine and create our very own pride buttons. *Our Tween/Teen programming is geared to youth aged 8-18. Please pre-register.*

As part of our Crafty Chats in the Stacks this month, we will be making buttons with our button maker, trying our hand at a silent book club, hand stitching a felt rainbow for pride month, and making three different types of candles. We meet at our Millbrook Branch on Wednesdays from 10:15am – 12:15pm. For more information on specific dates and to pre-register, check out our website at cavanmonaghanlibraries.ca.

On Wednesday, June 24th, join library staff at our Millbrook Branch from 1:00-3:00pm to view the powerful documentary No More Silent Battles, which shines a light on the growing crisis of dementia care in Canada. The documentary follows the deeply personal journeys of four families as they navigate a bureaucratic and confusing home care system. It exposes the silent battles that caregivers must wage to get the help they need. After the documentary, there will be a Q&A with Dr. Jenny Ingram.

If you need something a little lighter after the documentary, we will be having our first ever drop in Sewing Session on Tuesday, June 30th from 1:00-5:00pm at our Bruce Johnston Branch. Bring whatever sewing project that you are working on and let’s chat! Margaret and volunteers will be available to answer your sewing questions and help you with your project. *Please bring all of your supplies, including your sewing machine.*

Although it is crazy to start thinking about the summer, it is almost upon us! To kick off our summer programming, we will be having The Eyrie come to our Millbrook Branch on Friday, June 26th from 10:30-11:30pm. The Eyrie is a Birds of Prey centre with the goal of instilling a respect, sense of wonder, and knowledge of raptors in the public. Run by husband and wife team Matthew and Kristin Morgan, The Eyrie employs a respect for the welfare of the animals as a first and foremost priority in all that they do, and are constantly learning and adapting to try and be the best caretakers that they possibly can. Join library staff to see an up-close, free-flight demonstration. *Pre-registration is required. Please ensure that you register everyone who will be in attendance, parents and guardians included.*
