This time capsule was sealed on June 28th, 2000 as at Millbrook South Cavan Public School.
On May 22nd, Millbrook South Cavan students were introduced to the contents of a time capsule created by students at the school in June, 2000.
It was a great opportunity to get students together to hear what their predecessors were thinking 26 years ago on the afternoon before their annual Fun Fair where they celebrate their school with the community.
Inside were many trinkets, treasures and memorabilia. Tucked away into the cylinder was a photo of the entire student body circa June 2000 congregated in front of the school. Some classes prepared notes predicting the destinations of their future selves. Predictions from Mrs. Parker’s Grade four class focused primarily on professional sports careers, from the predictable NHL players to Lacrosse Players, skate-boarders and one student who predicted he would be a professional soccer player in Russia. Other careers included dance teachers, veterinarians, game designers, a future Prime Minister, a writer, an architect and someone looking to help the elderly.
There was a pen which predictably no longer functioned, a form for student evaluation and a handbook.
This cylinder has spent the last 26 years hidden in the back of a storage cupboard at the school. Rumour has it that there is an older capsule that was buried at the foot of the flagpole at the school, but past principals could not agree on whether or not it has already been unearthed.
Items in the cylinder will be on display in the glass cases in the hallway of the building until the end of the school year.
One of the items was a poem written by the students celebrating their school, which read, “Millbrook South Cavan is a real (sic) great school, If you go there you’re very cool. We work and learn, we Sing and Play, so let’s all say “Hip, Hip, Hurrah!”
I think the current contingent would share that sentiment.
