The weather was no surprise and most participants came prepared. There were colourful umbrellas, pop-up tents and an actual overnight tent set up on the banks of the pond. Before organizers arrived, some fish had been caught, and shortly after, for the second year in a row, the grand prize fish was captured by seven year old Charlotte Berry who landed Millie in the first hour. With a sporting attitude, Millie was returned to the water, to entice another angler. For her efforts, Charlotte received a fishing rod, ball cap and fishing tackle donated by the Cavan Monaghan Parks and Recreation Department. This was the third year in a row that Mother Nature discouraged participation, so organizers were pleased with the attendance estimated at 185. They are considering moving the event a week later when the weather might be more cooperative.
This year, the pond was stocked with 300 Brook Trout, along with another 10 large tagged brook trout released into the pond. Each of them were named by youngsters helping out. Three more tagged fish were reeled in: Willow, Zelda and Smiley (we think). All of them were grateful for the quick catch and release philosophy of the tournament which meant they were returned to the water to make a quick dash for safety.
There are still tagged fish out there waiting for the perfect cast. Registered participants have until 5pm on Friday, May 4th to contact Freshwater Conservation Millbrook’s Facebook page (formerly Trout Unlimited).
The Millbrook Lions’ Club would like to thank Nexicom, Baxter Creek Watershed Alliance and Millbrook BIA for financial support; and to Township Cavan Monaghan Parks &Facilities Manager Chris Allison and staff for site set up and a prize donation; Bass Pro for prize donations, Cavan Monaghan Fire Fighters for attending the event with education and goodie bags, BJ Tackle in Bewdley for worm bait, ORCA and MNR for permissions and permits; and all community volunteers that helped with this event.
Thank you to the anglers of all ages who always show up, even when it rains. See you next year.
