Let the Games Begin
The hype is mounting for the 2026 Winter Olympic Games which begin on Friday. Will there be a bit more emotion on display given the heightened tension around the world? Probably, but let’s hope it remains in check. After the 4 Nations series last year, the US men’s hockey team are looking for vindication (revenge?) and have said as much in a television commercial in which they are told they are going to Milan to bring home the biggest prize of all. “Canadian tears,” replies Team USA member Jack Eichel of the Vegas Golden Knights as Toronto Captain Auston Matthews looks on. I don’t think so.
Maybe we’ll switch gears and start rooting for Den-mark, which is bringing 39athletes to Milan this year, after sending fewer than 20 to the winter competitions since 1948. Twenty five of them are hockey players. I could live with a loss to the US men’s hockey team if the Danes took home gold.
For the next few weeks, we will have lots of Olympic sports coverage to keep us distracted from some of the uglier things we see on the news these days. That will be a welcome change. That and some chocolate will help us get through the month of February.
