Janet Stobie with new book.
Janet Stobie has recently released a much-anticipated follow-up to her successful original book called Dipping Your Toes that was released in 2012.
It is a tool for lay leaders and clergy who have responsibility for planning small group devotions that provides forty-six complete services in a compact, spiral-bound book. Users leading groups at a Bible study, Women’s or Men’s group or a nursing home will find inspiration, practical resources and leadership tips to support their effort.
The title is based on the idiom that means to tentatively try a new experience. Both books were designed to support professional church leaders and lay people who are leading worship gatherings in formal or informal settings. Each book contains a series of complete services: 44in the original version and 46 in the new one. Each service outline includes information, resources, bible readings, discussion questions and suggestions about how to deliver a Land Acknowledgement as well as hymn suggestions to support the topic for each service. Janet describes the books as useful for the beginning leader and faith seekers who want to “dip their toes” into leading discussions. There are tips about leading devotions and worship, and thoughts about prayer. The services are organized by month, with four devotions for each month from September through June, and six extra services described as Holy Moments bring ideas for special holiday and life celebrations.
One user describes it as a tool to use when the inspiration well feels dry. It can be used to guide a complete service or for inspiration to build a more personal service. Janet explains, “The Bible is relevant and full of wisdom for today’s living when we stop and think about its stories.” Her foundation message is straight out of the Bible: “When we follow Jesus’ command to love God and care for all people including ourselves, we soon realize that every one of us is God’s beloved child.” Her reflections connect the Bible to our daily lives. She encourages us to accept others and to see ourselves as God’s precious children.
