In anticipation of another Remembrance Day, Helen Bajorek and Jean-Michel Komarnicki of Postcards to the Front Canada visited Ms Alksnis’ Grade 5 class at Millbrook South Cavan School on November 4th.
The students engaged in a lively discussion about the war in Ukraine and wars in general, focusing on the efforts of those on the front lines. As a gesture of support, this organization collects postcards from individuals across Canada and the US offering messages of support to those on the front line in Ukraine. These hand written notes boost the morale of those in the field, from members of the military, medical staff and volunteers seeking to protect Ukraine and its people from the Russian invaders.
The students embraced the task. After being introduced to some basic Ukrainian expression and the Cyrillic alphabet used in this language, they selected messages for their own cards written in both Ukrainian and English to create heartfelt messages in Ukrainian and English on supplied postcards which they embellished with their own artwork. The images frequently merged images of the Canadian and Ukrainian flags as an indication of our solidarity with Ukraine, with decorative borders, hearts and flowers. Students were encouraged to express themselves and not to worry about making mistakes. Recipients appreciate the encouragement and messages from children are particularly welcome as many on the front line are missing their own families.
Soon the discussion turned to Remembrance Day and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), whose efforts we honour on November 11th. Students prepared message for veterans and current members of the CAF to thank them for their service.
Postcards were prepared by students in this class for whom this event allowed them to develop a better understanding of the role of our armed forces and to offer a tangible expression of appreciate for their efforts on our behalf. KG
