What a busy fall we have had at Cavan Monaghan Libraries and there is still more to come in the month of December!
The rearrangement at the Millbrook Branch is almost complete! The Harry Williams Room will be the dedicated children’s space – picture books, juvenile fiction and non-fiction, children’s French collection and toys and games. The main room will house all of the adult material – with the magazines and non-fiction now in this space. We would like to thank everyone who volunteered to help us with this move, including staff and many patron volunteers. We couldn’t have done this without your help! Stop by to check out the changes.
Interested in joining the Library Board? There is currently a vacancy that needs to be filled. The Library Board is a “governance board” which sets policies and directions. If you are a resident of Cavan Monaghan and interested in applying to join the Board, please contact Karla for more information.
Tween/Teen programming – clay ornament workshop. Join us on Tuesday, December 3rd from 4:30-6:30pm at our Bruce Johnston Branch. Using air-dry clay and string, let’s make a Christmas tree ornament! Space is limited, please pre-register.
Our Seniors Community Grant is still going strong! We have had a wonderful fall lineup of programs and activities. We welcomed back Death Doula, Dori, for another Death Café to continue the conversation around death and dying and having a “good death”. Community Care staff provided a session on fall prevention and Patti took us through a calming class of chair yoga. Three different agencies discussed volunteer opportunities in the community. Centennial Place in Millbrook, Peterborough Regional Health Centre’s HELP program and Millbrook & District Lions Club. So many wonderful ways to get involved! Adeilah Dahlke (trained professional organizer and owner of Jigsaw Organizing Solutions) shared organizing tips and tricks to help you tackle your clutter and keep yourself organized in your daily life and when you are downsizing.
Vonda (creative memories consultant) returns to our Bruce Johnston Branch on Tuesday, December 3rd from 1-3pm to show us how to create beautiful Christmas cards. Please visit our web site to pre-register.
On Wednesday, December 4th from 1-3pm at the Millbrook Branch John McFarland from Cavan Monaghan Community Policing will teach us about different types of frauds and scams and what to do to protect yourself against them.
We welcome back Andréa (needle felter extraordinaire) to our Millbrook Branch on Friday, December 6th from 1-3pm. Andréa will show us how to use a cookie cutter to create a felted snowman. All supplies will be provided.
Candle making! Two time slots available. Join library staff at our Millbrook Branch on Saturday, December 7th from 11:00-11:30am or 11:30-12:00pm to make your very own Christmas candle! Candles will be made out of soy wax, colorant, and your choice of either a teacup or glass cup. The wax will be melted in a crockpot, so please be aware that the wax will be hot. Please sign up on our website.
Gingerbread contest! The library will be purchasing gingerbread kits for you to make by yourself or in teams of two. A prize will be given for the best-looking gingerbread house. All supplies (including extra candy) will be provided. There will be two sessions – Wednesday, December 11th at the Millbrook Branch 1-3pm as part of our Seniors Community Grant or Tuesday, December 17th (teen/tween programming) at the Bruce Johnston Branch 4:30-6:30pm. Please pre-register so we can determine supplies needed.
Both branches will be open until 1pm on Christmas Eve, December 24th. We will be closed for a short break between Christmas and New Years and will reopen on Thursday, January 2nd at 10am. The Board and staff of Cavan Monaghan Libraries wishes you a safe and happy holiday season!
