Last month, two film productions featured Millbrook as the backdrop, but their presentation of the village is worlds apart.
On July 10th, the production of “Tall Pines” took over the main commercial area for several days. This filming was for an eight episode Netflix series called Wayward (working title Tall Pines). The series is described as a thriller “set in a bucolic but sinister town that explores the complex and sometimes twisted relationship between teens and adults”. Two troubled teens arrive at a residential correctional school in rural Oregon to learn that it is run by a sinister cult and find themselves in a battle for their sanity and their lives. The quaint small town atmosphere is merely a veneer hiding the for evil forces operating in positions of power in the community.
Filming for this series focused on exterior settings, with the old municipal building representing the police station and storefronts along King Street decked out with new products and services and the occasional American flag. The production stars Canadian actors Mae Martin who created the limited series, and Toni Collette.
Last week, Millbrook was used selected to depict an entirely different image, when Peterborough Community Care brought film production company Unmanned AV to film a commercial about the organization and the services it provides. In this instance, Millbrook was used to provide an idyllic background reminiscent of softer, kinder times past, where community support was pervasive and authentic.
The video was shot in the early morning hours of Monday, July 22nd, wrapping up before most businesses opened their doors. It featured classic cars and wardrobes from the ‘50’s with the Community Care Office transformed into a grocery store.
Two scenes were filmed in town. The first one at the grocery store showed a young woman helping an elderly customer with her groceries, and the second one depicted an old-fashioned picnic where the same young woman is serving food to her neighbours. The following day, more scenes were added in another location depicting the same young woman in her 80’s. The tagline for the video is “Life changes, but community doesn’t”.
This commercial is part of Community Care’s ongoing efforts to reach out to people who could use the organization’s support. It outlines the various services the organization provides to support residents throughout the City and County of Peterborough that help keep them healthy and safe in their own homes. The Peterborough branch currently serves more than 6,000 seniors and adults with disabilities, offering programs including Meals on Wheels, transportation services, health and wellness programs, social activities and personal distress alarms. They also hope the commercial helps them recruit more volunteers with the video, which will be shown on the organization’s social media channels as well as on Chex TV.
