Welcome to the Cadets!

On Tuesday evenings, 80+ teenagers meet at the Peterborough Armories as members of the 2672 Paratus group, the local Royal Canadian Army Cadets. Run by Reserve members of the Canadian Armed Forces and dedicated volunteers, this is a youth group like no other, and not for the reasons you may suspect.

This organization provides people from age 12 to 19 a wide variety of experiences that will challenge them physically and mentally as they develop skills and discipline with a focus on the outdoors. During their regular Tuesday evening sessions, cadets participate in the standard classes that are part of the Army Cadet program, which include land navigation studies, citizenship, leadership, effective speaking, outdoor survival, drill, sports and more. There are many extra weekend events and on other weeknights where the more exciting action occurs. For example, this past weekend the cadets participated in a weekend camp experience.   Cadets participate in many outdoor activities including developing skills of map and compass applications, GPS technology, orienteering, first-aid, camping and survival skills, canoeing, abseiling, trekking, mountain biking, etc. As individuals get more experienced, some will be selected for parachuting, white-water rafting and glacier climbing. There are also year-long programs including a Pipe and Drum Band, a drill team and a shooting range team, as well as sports teams. They hold competitive, Olympic-style marksmanship and biathlon, sports competitions, music training and competitions, and attend cultural outings to see the less physical side of life.

As cadets acquire new skills, they develop confidence and some find their leadership potential. They also have the opportunity to participate in ceremonial military events and citizenship activities that allow them to connect to their Canadian heritage. They develop a great sense of pride and discipline through their involvement in a hierarchical system that allows them to hone their leadership skills as they grow older and they learn to care for younger cadets. The program operates in a structured and disciplined environment, and while there are opportunities for exciting outdoor activities, safety is the main priority.

The leaders in Peterborough are Officers of 2672 Hastings & Prince Edward Regiment and members of the Cadet Instructors Cadre, a sub-component of the Reserve Force, whose primary duty is the supervision, administration and training of close to 65,000 sea, army and air cadets across Canada. These people have day jobs, and come from all walks of civilian life. The Peterborough Commanding Office, Major Tracey White, reads oncology reports for a Toronto Hospital by day. Other officers are homemakers, doctors, police officers, accountants, construction workers and ex-Regular Force military, all investing time in the development of Canada’s youth.

One thing the cadet program is not, is a recruiting pool for new members of the Armed Forces. Very few graduates move on to a military career, but the vast majority leave with a highly-developed sense of respect: for themselves and for others. That skill will differentiate them wherever their future takes them.

The cadet program is open to healthy Canadian Citizens or landed Immigrants aged 12 to 19. Participation is free, as the cadet organization is sponsored by civilian and local military organizations. Uniforms, training facilities and instruction are all free, but there can be small fees for optional outings to ensure the group is accessible to all. If you are interested in learning more about this group, they are hosting an Open House at the Armories on October 4th from 7 to 8:30 pm, or visit their website at www.2672paratus.ca. KG
