In 1985, the Provincial Government designated the third week in February as Ontario Heritage Week and representatives from the Municipal Revitalization and Heritage Advisory (MRHA) Committee marked this year’s celebration with the launch of their inaugural Heritage Recognition Awards.   Representatives from the MRHA Committee were on hand at the March 5th Regular Meeting of Council of the Township of Cavan Monaghan for a presentation to both the Millbrook & Cavan Historical Society and Nexicom for their contributions to the preservation of architecture and natural history.

The Municipal Heritage Recognition Award honours individuals or organizations who have made changes or updates to their homes or businesses which are in keeping with, and sympathetic to, the historic integrity of the building, site or landscape of the property.  Lance Nachoff received the award on behalf of Nexicom for the recent porch alterations at 1 King Street East in Millbrook.

The Heritage Preservation Award recognizes individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to the preservation and/or awareness of the natural, architectural, narrative or archival history of the Township.  This award was presented to Celia Hunter, Chair of the Millbrook & Cavan Historical Society, in honour of their continued dedication to the preservation of Needler’s Mill.

The MRHA Committee is a volunteer committee of the Township of Cavan Monaghan Council appointed to advise Council on matters relating to implementation of revitalization throughout the Township with consideration being given to the protection and promotion of the Township’s heritage resources and features.
