What began as a typical one day, 8 team tournament in 1958 has blossomed into a five day event as this year’s Peterborough Liftlock Atom Hockey tournament includes 116 teams, up more than 20 from last year. With divisions from all levels of play from all-star to house league, with a separate girls’ division, this tournament attracts entrants from across Ontario, Quebec and some from the U.S. With names like Wayne Gretzky, John Vanbiesbrouk, Bob Gainey, and Steve Larmer, among the tournament alumnae, the tournament inspires hockey fans to show their skills facing unfamiliar opponents, and some games are even broadcast on local television stations!

Not only do the players and families enjoy a hockey-filled few days, the tournament has been a generous supporter of local charities with the proceeds of this event. Some of the organizations which have received donations are the Big Brothers & Sisters Association, Juvenile Diabetes, Kawartha Halliburton Children’s Foundation, Learning Disabilities Association of Peterborough, the Peterborough Regional Health Centre Children’s Wish Foundation and Five Counties Children’s Center, among others.

All Millbrook Atom division teams joined the fun this weekend. See the stories of one of the games from each team on the following pages.
