Get ready to grow with the help of Jane and Peter Martell of Silver Creek Creations, who are joining the other vendors at our local monthly market. They established a nursery business on their property on Hutchison Drive four years ago, when they felt the grounds were safe from errant baseballs from their four enthusiastic ball-playing sons. Each year their nursery beds and their plant offerings expand with a variety of hardy, easy-care plants.

The couple focus their energies on hardy perennials which will flourish in the local climate provided they are planted in appropriate conditions. The business was fashioned after the former Rural Roots business formerly located on Hayes Line and operated by gardening expert Linda Friend. Known for her no-nonsense approach to gardening with no coddling of plants allowed, Linda passed along a wealth of knowledge about plants that can thrive in our area to Jane, who worked there several years before the Friends relocated to Bobcaygeon. Jane embraces the philosophy that only the strong survive, and believes that a relocated plant should be watered every day for five days, but after that, they’re on their own. With that kind of attitude, you can be sure that plants offered by Silver Creek Creations are suitable for local gardens.

If you are looking for a broader plant selection, they welcome you to visit their location at 876 Hutchison Drive, where you will see most of their plants growing in the ground rather than in pots. This allows visitors to better envision how the plant will ultimately look once established, and customers can be confident that the plants they are taking home have not been languishing somewhere but are fresh and ready to go. The Martells are glad to share their considerable expertise and if you have a question they can’t answer, they also have a small library of garden books in a cabin on their property where visitors can perform their own research.

They plan to bring a variety of garden plants to their booth at the Millbrook Farmers’ Markets- daylilies, hostas, grasses and anything from their garden that is in bloom at the time. Make sure to stop by their booth to see their offerings and where you can be confident that with very little tlc, those plants will flourish in your garden as well. KG
