Plan Your Organic Vegetable Garden with Expert Advice

As spring approaches, many thoughts will turn to what to plant in this year’s vegetable garden and/or containers and how to grow tasty treats for the dinner table without the application of chemical additives or pesticides. The upcoming Millbrook Garden Club on the evening of Wednesday April 5th will sure to be of interest as expert guest speaker Paula Anderson will give an informative presentation on the ins and outs of organic vegetable gardening.

Paula Anderson is an ecological farmer who runs Sun Root Organics – an innovative small-scale urban/rural organic vegetable operation. She sells her produce at the Peterborough Downtown Farmers’ Market as well as through By the Bushel Community Food Co-operative. Paula teaches in Trent University’s Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems Program as well as in the Indigenous Environmental Studies/Science Program. She has a Master of Science in sustainable food systems design focusing on sustainable agriculture and permaculture and is presently working on her PhD in Indigenous Studies at Trent University. In conjunction with community Elders, knowledge holders and practitioners, Paula is currently working on ways to support the restoration of traditional food and agriculture systems within the Mississauga Anishinaabeg and Haudenosaunee territories.

She is also an avid seed saver, urban maple tree tapper and manoomin (wild rice) harvester. Everyone is invited to learn more from Paula at the April 5th Garden Club meeting which starts at 7:30 pm at St. Thomas Church Hall, located at 16 Centre Street in Millbrook. Please park in the back parking lot and bring your own mug. The cost is $3 paid at the door.
