New Therapy Service in Town or in Your Home

Susan Brettell will offer Bowen Therapy beginning in April.

Certified Bowtech Practitioner Susan Brettell introduced herself at last week’s BIA breakfast in a brief presentation about her plans to bring a gentle form of physical therapy developed in Australia to the community.

For the last few years, Brettell has been delivering Bowen Therapy to clients from two treatment locations in Oshawa and Bowmanville, and will add service hours to a Millbrook on Wednesdays from 10 am to 2pm. She also offers a mobile service where she delivers her services in the comfort of your home.

After working for many years in emergency services, Brettell was looking for a career that was less physical and stressful where she could continue to help people. Her sister introduced her to this gentle and effective therapy that is calming for the practitioner as well as the client. She was attracted to it intellectually and emotionally, as it was consistent with her philosophy that the body can heal itself as well as her aversion to a dependency on pharmaceuticals.

Bowen therapy relies on a series of very gentle and specific moves to manipulate the body’s connective tissue or fascia to stimulate the nervous system. As Brettell explains, this stimulus reminds our bodies what it’s like to feel healthy, and encourages the body to begin the process of healing itself. It has very broad applications and can help people of any age. At its most fundamental level, it relieves pain and stress relief from physical traumas or emotional upsets to something as complex as assisting with conception. It is also used by athletes seeking to enhance their athletic performance. As a runner, Brettell first used this therapy to address leg cramps that were interfering with her sport and more recently has found it to relieve discomfort stemming from Sciatica.

Bowen therapy sessions are similar to massage treatments but the applications are very gentle. The practitioner applies a series of gentle moves which can be applied through light clothing. The objective is to stimulate adjustments in muscle tension to allow the body to respond. Introductory sessions are used to pinpoint the source of pain, but some clients come to find calm.

Often clients come to this alternative therapy treatment because they are at the end of their rope and have exhausted other forms of therapy. The procedures have demonstrated the ability to relieve a wide variety of injury-related issues and other acute and chronic problems using the body’s innate healing mechanisms.   In her clinical training Brettell has seen this therapy address issues from arthritis, gout and menstrual pain to digestive issues, as well as problems stemming from stress.

Brettell will begin to offer Bowen Therapy sessions on Wednesdays beginning April 19th at Oasis Boutique located at 26 King Street East in Millbrook. For more information, email mailto:susan@bowenbybrettell.comor call 705-927-4079. KG
