March Masquerade Celebrates Community

The Millbrook and Cavan Historical Society’s March Masquerade, held March 25 in Millbrook’s Royal Canadian Legion Hall was all it aspired to be: a glittering gala, a visual spectacle, an evening of laughter and fun, and a very successful fundraiser.

The hall was transformed into a Mardi Gras-inspired ballroom through the vision and hard work of Liz Avery, Shelley Lambe and Jerry Van Zeyl, aided by enthusiastic volunteers from the BIA Decorating Committee. The Downeyville Fiddlers and Friends had people up on the dance floor right from the start, and professional photographer Marjorie McDonald was busy throughout the evening creating a visual record of the masked and costumed crowd. On the walls, spectacular masks created by local artists attracted generous bids, as did the Silent Auction items donated by businesses and individuals. Geoff Taylor ably filled the role of Master of Ceremonies, and a brigade of volunteers kept platters of food full to fuel the revelers. And there was cake!

The evening was a celebration of community, and lived up to its promise to “bring sparkle and warmth to the waning days of winter”. It also raised the funds that the Historical Society needs in order to continue to promote local history with a regular schedule of speakers, and preserve local records and photographs.

Next in the speaker series, on Thursday, April 27, is “Murder!” He Wrote: Foster Meharry Russell and the mysterious death of Joseph Scriven, presented by Robert Ross. In May, Robert Winslow will be the guest speaker. The Historical Society programs take place in the Fireside Lounge at Centennial Place in Millbrook.
