Local Skating Club Builds Skills and Confidence On and Off the Ice

Karen Graham

The local figure skating club has acquired more ice time this year, hoping to continue their momentum as their membership grows. Theirs is a very inclusive group, providing skill development at seven levels of proficiency, from beginners aged three to five just learning to keep upright on their blades, to creative interpretive ice dancing for the most adept performers. In the Millbrook Club, there are both competitive and recreational skaters; the decision is up to the individuals. The focus of the club is to help their members improve their proficiency and build their skills, but the number one goal is always to ensure the skaters have fun!

The club follows the CanSkate curriculum which is Canada’s unique, learn-to-skate program focusing on fun, participation and basic skill development for skaters of all ages. The club also offers the more advanced StarSkate program which builds skills in ice dance, free skate and interpretive skating and prepares students for accreditation through a national, standardized testing system. Group lessons are conducted by professional, certified coaches and assistants with a maximum student ratio of one coach to ten skaters. Our local club coaches Melissa Davidson and Shelley Storace each bring a wealth of experience to the ice. Shelly has been coaching for 30 years, 15 of them in Millbrook, and teaches at all levels from Pre-CanSkate up to the competitive Gold Test Level. Melissa has been skating in Millbrook since the age of five. Now in her 13th year as a coach, she coaches all levels but particularly enjoys Free Skate and Interpretive Skating…

The local club finished last season with 63 skaters and hopes to grow that number again this season. They have 10 hours of ice time each week from Tuesday to Friday at very convenient hours, and the coaches and club members are eager to get back on the ice. Registration takes place on Wednesday, September 9th from 5 to 7pm at the Lion’s Den, located at 920 Larmer Line at County Road 10.
