Local Farms At Work Events

There are several workshops scheduled over the next few weeks by Farms at Work in our area aimed at helping local food businesses sharpen their skills and target their audiences.

First is a free, day-long workshop called “Selling Food to Ontario”, and is aimed at food producers looking to expand their businesses. Topics will include the basics of food regulation, food safety, market opportunities, food labelling and trends in the industry. The event takes place on Monday September 19th from 9 am to 4:30 pm at the Township office at 988 County Rd. 10 and is sponsored by Peterborough Economic Development.

On September 26th, Urban Harvest will to running a workshop at 9788 County Rd. 10 in Campbellcroft from 9 am until noon and will discuss harvesting and cleaning see.   Urban Harvest has been harvesting and selling seed in the Toronto area for nearly 20 years and offers over 100 kinds of seed. This year, the organization is working with Seeds of Diversity Canada and The Bauta Family Initiative on Canadian Seed Security to increase the availability of locally-adapted bean seed. Urban Harvest owner Colette Murphy and Jill Bishop of Urban Tomato will share their wisdom at this event, offering information about seed-harvesting and cleaning techniques and will also showcase some great seed cleaning equipment appropriate for community gardens as well as commercial market gardens.

Registration is required for both events. For further information or to register, visit www.farmsatwork.ca, contact them at info@farmsatwork.ca or call (705) 743-7671.
