Junior Durham Golf Qualifier at Baxter Creek

The weekend of the Junior Durham Golf qualifier offered challenges beyond nerves, as the weather was more like winter than spring. On Saturday, wind was the culprit, blowing balls around, and Sunday brought a sprinkling of snow. As a nod to the weather, toques were passed out instead of ball caps to the 76 players who returned on the second day. The reward was a 10 tournament tour where players prepare for the rigors of competition and wind is just one of many obstacles to overcome. The qualifier was extended to two days to provide a more accurate screen for the players. On the first day, as in the pro tours, players step up to the tee and have their names announced by the starter, which can be quite intimidating for anyone. By the second day, golfers are better prepared for distractions and have a better chance to show their true potential.

For the Baxter Creek pro, Kevin Gunther, this competition was personal, as his 13-year-old son Karsen was vying for a spot on the team and was successful for the second consecutive year.

The tour is designed to develop skills related to the game of golf with an eye to supporting our next generation of professional players, but on the way, participants build discipline, honesty, integrity and sportsmanship- attributes which will serve them well whatever their score card reads.
